The challenge, which ended in November, was an online challenge targeting startups and developers from Africa and the Middle East. The challenge was aimed at boosting innovation in this region and it was open to African developers who reside in the countries that Orange operates in.

The competition ran across 12 countries with each country expected to crown and announce their top three local projects. The local winners would then enter into a group challenge where they could walk away with 10,000 Euros as overall winners.  One of the competition panelists Gazza Motswagole said they received a total of 20 entries from local developers. “From the 20 ideas we received, the evaluation committee picked the top 10 ideas. The 10 short listed developers were then given access to Orange APIs to develop and integrate their services,” he said.

The solution based mobile application is expected to largely benefit farmers. With eCattle farmers can register on the APP via USSD and provide their brand certificate. Each time a beast is housed at Matimela Kraal, the database will be updated and if a match turns up for any of the registered brand certificates, the owner will be notified by SMS to come and collect his cattle before they are auctioned.

In addition, eCattle provides an eMarket for farmers to list cattle for sale in each region. The brainchild of the app Raditladi said local butcheries and anyone who need to buy cattle would access the list and contact farmers directly removing the middleman. “The application will reduce rates of lost cattle, reduce costs to sell cattle (no commission for middleman), as well as improve the farmers ability to reach buyers and sellers nationwide,” he said.

Raditladi will now battle it out in the top 12 with developers from the other AMEA region countries. The final winner will be selected on November 25.
