Police Nab Farmer Killer

The state alleges that Edwin Ncube (48) killed Lionel Edward Venables on October 18 at River View Farms. Inspector Mengistu Chigala told the court that they are still looking for another Zimbabwean who allegedly escaped to Zimbabwe after he committed the offence.

Chigala said that they have enlisted Interpol to help them arrest the suspect on the run.

Chigala applied for Ncube to be remanded because he was a flight risk adding that he was only arrested last week Thursday. “Our investigations are still ongoing. The accused may escape for good if granted bail since he came to Botswana and has no permanent place of abode in the country,” said Chigala. Ncube told the court that he does not have anything to say in relation to his remand.

Principal Magistrate Sijabuliso Siziba adjourned the matter to December 2. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old woman from Serowe appeared before Justice Barnabas Nyamadzabo to apply for bail in a case in which she allegedly killed her newly born baby at Serowe in 2010. Motivating her reasons to be granted bail, Thatayaone Lesego, said that she left her other children with her sickly sister who is not taking care of them properly because of her sickness. “My parents are dead and I have been in custody since May 21, 2015 after my bail was cancelled by a magistrate at Serowe following my committal to the High Court,” said Lesego.

Asked by Nyamadzabo if she will not escape if granted bail, Lesego replied: “I cannot run away from attending mentions since I have accepted my fate. I also promise not to commit any offences if given bail. I have been religiously following conditions that were set by the magistrate in Serowe. I do not want to compound my situation by indulging in other crimes.” Neo Machola from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) did not opposed the bail application.

Machola said that the investigating officer told her that Lesego is a trustworthy person who abided by her bail conditions at all times and is a good candidate for bail.
