Man allegedly commits suicide after lodge burns

According to a source, the man who was cleaning the yard burnt litter, which set a Khawa Lodge thatched building ablaze.

The man is said to have then committed suicide by hanging.

Gantsi Police Station Commander, Superintendent Isaac Bojang, confirmed the fire incident, but would not link the man who committed suicide to the fire.

“Khawa Lodge administration block, which comprises of offices, the kitchen and store rooms caught fire yesterday and burnt to the ground. When our officers went to the scene the following morning they found a man hanging from showers at the lodge’s camping site about 150 metres away from the administration block,” he said.

Bojang said the 42-year-old man from Khakhea worked for the security company that looks after the lodge. He, however, said they were yet to find out if the man who committed suicide was the one on duty as no one was found at the scene during the fire.

The property belongs to Babereki Investments, a subsidiary of Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU), which was said to be in the process of leasing it to the Cresta Group.
