Barclays Head of marketing and corporate relations, Racheal Mushaike confirmed to The Monitor Business that indeed Moleta has left them but could neither disclose the reasons.

“He is no longer in the employ of the bank. Regrettably, we cannot provide further details and we do not comment on the terms, conditions or circumstances of our employees,” said Mushaike.

A source within the bank told The Monitor Business that since the speculation over Moleta’s departure surfaced last week, he has not been coming to the office even when the memo circulated on Friday he was nowhere to be seen.

Following Moleta’s departure, Keabetswe Pheko has been appointed as the Chief Operating Officer in an interim capacity until further notice.

Moleta was headhunted by the Barclays Bank board, reportedly with the intention to understudy Reinette van der Merwe and take over as managing director of the bank next year in a quest to localise the post, which was delocalised two years ago.

One of the mandates of his job when he assumed the top seat at Barclays was to continue the turnaround strategy implemented by van der Merwe as she sought to change the bank’s fortunes, which have been dwindling in the last three years.
