Nnana Gaditshwane, said she expects the President to tell Batswana long-term measures that will be implemented to uplift lives and create employment opportunities. She said that Selebi-Phikwe as a mining town should have more job opportunities.

“We demand serious interventions not programmes such as backyard gardening and Ipelegeng,” she said.

Gaditshwane said that they expect the President to also deliver an inspiring speech in as far as socio-economic developments of the town is concerned. “We want to know what will be done to improve our lives as residents; we have a mine here but most of us are living in poverty stricken families,” she said.

Another resident, Evelyn Ogaketse, said that she expects the President to address issues concerning developments in the town.

She said she expects the President to introduce long-term projects that residents will benefit from for a long period of time.

“We want projects that will last for long not pet projects like Ipelegeng,” she said. 

She also said that she expects the President to address issues of developing the state of the town. “We want to know what will be done to improve the state of our town.  Selebi-Phikwe is still lagging behind in developments, one will not believe is a mining town,” she said. She said that she expects the President to address how the economy of Selebi–Phikwe can be boosted.

 “There is need to boost the economy of our town by empowering residents to venture into some businesses rather than relying mostly on mining,” she said. Some residents declined to comment on the issue stating that there have been some promises in previous addresses but most of the promises were never delivered.

“I will not share my expectations because I feel is a waste of time. Most of the promises made in the previous addresses have not been fulfilled yet,” said one resident who preferred anonymity.
