BFA denies snubbing Sexwale

Reports in neighbouring South Africa claim that from the COSAFA region, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia all snubbed Sexwale’s nomination. Sexwale, however, managed to garner enough nominations for him to make the final cut.  The former South African cabinet minister is among eight candidates who will battle it out for arguably sports’ most powerful position, the FIFA presidency.

Sebego yesterday dismissed claims the local soccer body declined to nominate Sexwale.

“It’s not true. I was invited to South Africa, but that trip coincided with my trip to Cairo.Nomination is just that, we are still going to sit down as the executive committee to see who  to support,” Sebego told Mmegi Sport.

Quizzed if they would consider backing Sexwale, he said although South Africa is a strategic partner, it would only be fair to give other members of the BFA committee a chance to air their views on the matter.

“We have received communication from FIFA confirming candidates and this has been sent to the rest of the executive committee,” he said. “The issue will be discussed at our next meeting.”

The government would be consulted on the process as it is a critical stakeholder responsible for financing the BFA.
