The phase consists of two buildings that were handed over to BIUST by the contractors, Time Project Company, yesterday. BIUST construction project manager, Onkabetswe Modungwa, told Mmegi that the facilities came as a relief to the university as it was operating under pressure with limited resources and space.

“The new facilities have specialised laboratories where our students will use resources specialised for their projects hence improving their curriculum,” he said.

Modungwa added that before, they were forced to rent facilities for the students which, was very costly and exhausting the budget of the school.

In addition, the temporary facility lacked space and could not accommodate all the students, which put strain on the university and they had to put more hours so as not to leave out any student.

About 400 first year students will be enrolled next year to the college adding to the number of post-graduate and undergraduate students that the university initially had.

Modungwa also expressed his gratitude to the contractors saying that they have done a splendid job considering the time frame of the project.

“The project started in September last year and it was completed end of September this year and that needs to be applauded because they delivered even before the completion time we agreed upon,” said Modungwa.

He further said that currently they only have three departments that will be running at the college namely chemistry, maths and statistics, however all in all the college has eight departments with the remaining five  to be constructed in due course.

He noted that the ambition of the university is to become a world-class research institution and the Science, Engineering and Technology university of choice in the region, therefore the construction of the college is a step forward in living their ambition.
