Charma Gal walked away with four awards, making her the biggest winner on the night

The awards ceremony, which was held at Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) on Saturday saw Charma Gal scoop the Best Female Artist, Best Mosakaso, Album of the Year and Song of the Year for her hit track Sekuta.

The four awards made her the first Motswana musician to win so many awards in one night.

For Album of the Year, Charma Gal was up against big guns like BK Proctor, MMP Family and Amantle BW, but in the end she beat them all. In the Song of the Year category, her hit song Sekuta was competing against Amantle’s Moratiwa, Gaone’s Kopisa, MMP Family’s Lebala Ka Nna and MC Maswe with Zhwamaronga.

She had a higher chance of winning because her other hit, Hard Rock was also in the running for a Song of the Year category.  She also emerged ahead of Samantha Mogwe and Amantle in the Best Female Artist category.

The awards confirmed her place as one of the biggest local entertainers.  It is a bittersweet win for Charma Gal, just a few months after her much publicised split from ex-husband, Kabelo Mogwe.  It was not too much of a surprise to see the singer take home a slew of awards, as she is on the crest of a wave from her album, Sekuta saga Charma Gal. Close behind her were MMP Family and Amantle.  MMP walked away with Best Group or Combo award after beating Eskimos, Heart Beat Family and Amanandos.

They also returned to the stage for the Best Kwaito award. Amantle also won big after beating Samantha Mogwe to the Best R&B album.

Amantle, the new-kid-on-the-block, outdid herself and also scooped the Best Newcomer award.  Shumba Ratshega of Ke Thala Dinte won the best male artist beating MC Maswe, Vee and Noello. Despite losing in her other nominations, Samatha Mogwe won the Best-Packaged Album.

DJ Oats scooped the Best DJ award. Best Folklore went to Idle, while Khoza won Best Disco.

Mafitlhakgosi won the BOMU President’s award.

Besides some artists walking home with smiles and others unhappy for not winning, the night delivered many memorable moments including performances by a number of artists.
