The game started an hour late because of the heat wave in the area. Due to the unfavourable playing conditions both teams started the game at a low pace, knocking the ball around. The first real chance of the game came in the 17th minute when Kumbulani Madziba put in a ball into the box, but Patrick Kaunda failed to connect well with his header going wide. Kaunda redeemed himself in the 26th minute when he slotted in a Phenyo Molefe cross to give BDF the lead. Goitseone Phoko denied Madziba in a one- on-one situation to force a corner. Madziba broke through the defence, but his goal was ruled offside in the 38th minute. The teams went in to recess with Matebele still leading by Kaunda’s goal.
GU made a double change a few minutes into the second half with Bismark Appiah and Oswego Gaotewe coming in for Ntesang Simanyana and Kgololo Kgogobi respectively. Matebele piled pressure on the shaky GU defence, but failed to convert the chances. Benson Shilongo’s shot went over the bar after the defence cleared a ball in the box. Kaunda cut in a cross in to the box, but Madziba skied his shot in the 85th minute.
