Kanye Sanitation Project Progresses

This was revealed by Estate Construction acting Project Manager, Julius Katzke.

Estate Construction, the citizen-owned company carrying out the project, is laying the 400-kilometre pipeline, 11 pump stations and waste waterworks. However, the project has been severely affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“We experienced a very bad 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic as there was the lockdown, which meant that we could not continue with the construction works and we have now mobilised more resources to catch up with lost time,” Katzke said.

With the mobilisation of more resources, Katzke said they managed to complete civil works in all three lift stations, eight pump stations, three vacuum stations and treatment works. Katzke highlighted that they started 2021 very well though they were delayed by recent weather conditions, especially the heavy downpour that filled up trenches meant for pipelines and seepage of groundwater into the pump stations.

Another challenge, which is slowing the construction pace of the project, is said to be the rocky conditions that come with the topographical terrain in Kanye.

On employment created, Community Liaison officer for Estate Construction, Mike Mothibi said they have over 400 workers mostly from Kanye and the catchment areas.

“The project of this magnitude will invariably have a great socio-economic impact on the village as some of the workers are renting houses and some are selling food to our workers and they are benefitting greatly from this project in that respect,” he said.
