Cooking from the heart

Chefs are also classified as foodies. Burnt is a remarkably funny and emotional story about the love for food, the love between two people, and the power of second chances.

Hangover funny man and American Sniper star Bradley Cooper (Adam Jones) is a top chef this time around and alongside him actress Sienna Miller (Helene) who was his wife in American Sniper plays a supporting role as his second in command in the kitchen.  Director, John West, famous for political TV hit series The West Wing, brings this kitchen life to us.

Action

Burnt is filled with doses of action. This movie makes a kitchen a hostile environment with tempers flaring, and dishes flying in the air. Adam Jones makes everyone’s life a living hell in the kitchen in a quest to perfect his menus. In one of the scenes, Adam assaults his assistant chef Helene just for the drive results.

The film touches on real life issue. Jones, a society reject, tries very hard to resurrect his career.

The film also has twists and shocking revelations. For instance Mitchel agrees to join Jones’s kitchen staff, only to betray Jones by adding hot pepper to a foodie’s meal to settle a grudge from the past.

While the film is classified under the comedy genre, the comedy aspect doesn’t come out boldly like the drama element of the movie. Certain instances like when Jones gets devastated thinking that Mitchel might have tarnished his dream by giving a foul dish to a rumoured prestigious Michel star grader, show the drama characteristics of the movie.

There is also a saying that behind every successful man there is a strong woman, Sienna Miller’s character justifies this as she uplifts her partner to soldier on.

The cinematography is delightfully crisp, set in a lavish restaurant kitchen. It transformed the cinema into a thrilling kitchen experience with sounds of kitchen utensils and flaming grills.

Burnt is very informative. Along its edutainment lines, it teaches people that cooking is not only meant for women.

It also shows the importance of food presentation. Burnt tells a story charged with passion, love, optimism, ambition, struggle, betrayal and success amongst other themes.

Reception

Burnt was exclusively released first in some sections of the world before the US, so it also doesn’t yet rank in the prestigious box office chart. However, the movie has only made 1.7 million dollars from the territories where it has premiered, including Botswana. It is scheduled for release in the US on October 30.

Burnt was a good, but it fell short of its comedy duties, so I give it 6.8.
