Vision 2036 Task Team promises to avoid political dilution

President Ian Khama recently announced the task team for the new national vision.
Former minister, Neo Moroka, whom Khama has entrusted to deliver Vision 2036, told members of the press yesterday that despite the composition of the team including politicians, they will avoid bringing politics into their mandate. He said they do not want their mandate diluted. The composition of the team has representation from the three main political parties, the trade unions, business or private sector, Non Governmental Organisations, youth, sport, faith-based organisations, bogosi, council for disabled people and the media. “We promise not to go on political context. We have names of politicians in the task team but these are people who have a common desire to serve this nation and come up with a vision,” he said.
Moroka said although Khama selected them, they do not report to any board. He said as the chairman he will be reporting directly to the Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Eric Molale.
He said independent or not, his team has to formulate a vision that represents the aspirations of Batswana. He explained that the team was chosen based on knowledge, experience, expertise and desire to contribute to the development of the country.
He said although there is time limitation, they are expected to produce the final vision document by end of May 2016. “We can achieve through participation of all.
Our mandate includes mobilising Batswana to define their own long term social, environmental and economic development aspirations, review background material including the on-going evaluation of Vision 2016, and the framework for development of Vision 2036,” he said.
The former minister of Trade and Industry said in coming up with the vision, the team will take stock of the progress in the successes and challenges of Vision 2016 to interrogate key issues. The team will hold a retreat exercise over the weekend to develop the roadmap.
He said they will also borrow from the international community on the recently adopted Sustainable Development Goals as well as the UN Agenda 2063. Moroka said they have been allocated an initial budget of P19 million. He said they expect to cover all the constituencies in their consultations.
Meanwhile the substantive chairperson of Vision 2016 and current vice chairperson to Moroka, Martin Makgatlhe, said the final evaluation of Vision 2016 is ongoing. He said the Vision 2016 evaluation paper will form a cornerstone of Vision 2036. He promised that the evaluation will be comprehensive to work as a guideline for the new vision.
