Zim man caught with two Botswana passports

In the first count, the state alleges that Chirunga gave false information to a person employed in the Civil and National Registration office in Francistown in order to illegally obtain a passport on May 8, 2013.

He is also alleged to have given false information to a person employed in the public service on December 10, 2007 in order to obtain an Omang.

State prosecutor, Gasemotho Pitlagano, told the court that Chirunga possesses two Botswana passports.

He further stated that Chirunga’s nationality is in question and they believe that he is a citizen of Zimbabwe.

“We have just received documents from Zimbabwe that show that Chirunga is a Zimbabwean,” said Pitlagano.

Chirunga’s attorney, Nehemiah Mugoni, told Senior Magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalu that he only saw the documents that Pitlagano was talking about in the morning and would need more time to carefully study them and advise his client accordingly.

“The documents I received do not appear in the list of documents contained in the file.

The person who provided the documents is not one of the witnesses who will give evidence in court.

I will have to go back to the drawing board and re-strategise.

In a nutshell I want to be given more time to study the documents and advise my client accordingly,” said Mugoni.

Mulalu postponed the matter to February 16, 2016 for a case management conference.

Continuation of trial was set for June 8 and 9 next year.

Chirunga is also accused of murdering University of Botswana professor Richard Sehurutshe early this year.

Sehurutshe’s body was found dumped in Molepolole, while his car was missing. Chirunga is alleged to have abducted the deceased at his Phase II home in Gaborone for some time before he was found dead.

Chirunga also faces two counts of vehicle theft.
