The former 400 metres runner started work on October 1.

Ngwigwa told Mmegi Sport from his new base in Abuja, Nigeria, that the four-year contract entails monitoring Olympic solidarity programmes for the African National Olympic committees (NOCs) and to encourage the update of the programmes by the member countries.

He said his job is also to ensure that member national Olympic committees are able to access the programmes. The position has a permanent place in ANOCA’s coordination commission and he is responsible for supervising host cities for games under ANOCA.

“I have been tasked with making follow up on offers for training of African experts by partner organisations and NOCs.  I will always look for ways African member NOCs can exploit opportunities provided by International Olympic Committee (IOC),” he said.

Ngwigwa explained that he has not quit athletics, but retired from active sport and taking part in competitions.

He said the appointment is a growth for him as a sports person especially on the management and administrative side.

Ngwigwa said he has been part of the national athletics team for 10 years and he intends to learn a lot from his job and utilise the experience to assist in growing sports on the continent.  He said his role entails being the secretary and adviser of the ANOCA games commission and to provide necessary technical reports.
