Confirming the incident, Bobonong Police Station commander, superintendent Paul Seoko said that they received the report late last week about an elderly man who allegedly sexually abused his primary school-going great-granddaughter.

According to the Bobonong police chief, family members of the centenarian lodged the complaint against their head of the family.

He said that after the police report was registered, the minor was then taken to the nearest clinic for medical test, examination and treatment after the alleged sexual act.

Seoka further said that the centenarian suspect was also taken for questioning but was later released from police custody on the same day.

He also said that they are still trying to figure out what exactly transpired on that fateful day because it is still unclear as to what led to the act.

Seoka added: “People at his age (suspect) normally behave and act like children. They often revert to a younger state of mind hence everything is a bit sketchy.”

He added that the suspect has not appeared before the court and is currently at home because they are still gathering all the facts relating to the matter.

Investigations into this horrific incident are still ongoing.

He also expressed great concern over the alarming rate of defilement cases recorded by his policing area.

Seoka added that the statistics indicate that last year their policing station had registered 23 defilement cases.

He added that since the beginning of this year,  they have recorded four defilement cases.

He also said that most of the perpetrators of defilement cases were mostly people known to the minor and their families.

Bobonong police boss urged parents to always take care of their children and always report defilement cases.

Just recently   Botswana  Police Service (BPS)  spokesperson Assistant Commissioner  Dipheko Motube raised concern in the media about the rising number of defilement cases across the country.

He said that they have registered a total of 207 defilement cases from January to date compared to 137 same in the period last year.

BPS  spokesperson further said that it is difficult for some cases to be reported because some perpetrators are the breadwinners and their victims depend on them for their survival.
