BONA spokesperson, Kealeboga Ramogobya said the tournament is primarily meant to give the young players the opportunity to shine on a big stage.

“This tournament is a star tournament. We get to identify future stars,” he said. Ramogobya said the players who do not get the chance to play in their individual teams use the tournament to get game time and prove themselves.

He said the tournament will continue for the next two weeks with the final held in the third week.

Ramogobya added that other teams like Future Stars did not get to field their senior players because most of them are currently engaged at the Botswana Tertiary Schools Sports Association (BOTESSA) games. “We didn’t want to create a conflict with BOTESSA because they are our partners,” he said.

The first game saw Spar South beating Spar North 31-13 in a one sided game. The two teams had players over the age of 23 years.

South took the lead from the beginning and the northern team couldn’t catch up.

The South team scored freely in the second quarter before doubling their lead in the third to put the tie well and truly beyond their northern counterparts. The last quarter saw the leading team increase their margin and wrapping up the game with a 31-13 victory.
