Dominant Ayuso bags Selebi-Phikwe race

The race, hosted in Selebi-Phikwe for the first time, attracted more than 100 cyclists.

Motloutse Cycling Club in collaboration with the Botswana Cycling Association organised the race, which saw cyclists compete in 160km, 90km, 60km, 30km and 10km fun race.

 Ayuso triumphed in the 160km open male race, crossing the line in 4:42:18 and walked away with P5,000 cash.

Masepe Boipuso came second also in 4:42:18 in a photo finish and pocketed P3,000 while Chipongo Bright was third in 4:42:53 and received P2,000. All cyclists in the top 10 in the 160km race received cash prizes with Pono Thabo who finished 10th getting P400.

 In the Under-23 male category, Tekelelo Lulu was first in a time of 4:39:55 and pocketed P2,500 while Thato Madimabe was second and took home P2,000. James Masimo finished third in 4:44:12 and received P1,000.

In the 90km junior category, Moagisi Mafoko clocked 2:47:59 to finish first and pocketed P4,000.

Arnold Kokwane was second while Amogelang Thwabi finished third.

In 90km junior female category, Jip Vader got position one in 3:11:52 followed by Nonofo Maswabi in 3:40:45 while Segomotso Ditlhakeng was third (3:51:48). 

Loago Swalo was the champion in the 90km open male category, finishing in 2:58:30. Anouk Van der Geest (2:47:35) was first in the female 90km race.

Oduetse Kgoboge clinched the title in the 60km open male race in 1:59:45 while Clearance Abel won the women’s race in 2:40:10.

Alan Tlhabano is the men’s 30km race champion after clocking 1:11:57 while Patience Showa won the female category in 1:35:49 followed by Bolele Malope in 1:51:08.

Motloutse Cycling Club spokesperson, Ofe Motiki said cycling in Botswana is growing.

“This championship showed us that cycling is growing as all cycling clubs in the country came and supported us,” she said, adding that: “Our sponsors did not just contribute money and sit back, they showed us support in every step we took to prepare for the race, especially that it was our first time to host the championship”.
