The previous winners received P1million, the same as the league winners and the P200,000 increase makes it a first for local football. Mascom chief executive officer (CEO), Jose Couceiro announced on Wednesday night at the launch of the competition that the winner this season will pocket P1.2million.

The past winners have been receiving one million while runners up walked away with P500, 000.  This season the losing finalist takes home P550, 000. Gaborone United (GU) are the defending champions and the most successful in the competition.

They have won it two out of five times. The first edition was won by Township Rollers in 2012 before GU scooped it the following year. BDF XI also finally succeeded in 2014 after failing twice in the final before GU won it again last season after beating Rollers in an entertaining final. This year’s edition welcomes new entrants, Orapa United who will kick start this year’s quarterfinals against Extension Gunners. National champions, Mochudi Centre Chiefs take on Gilport Lions who also make a debut in the competition under new name. Rollers are up against Police XI while GU start their title defence against BDF XI.

The Botswana Football Association (BFA) president, Tebogo Sebego hailed Mascom for their continued contribution to Botswana football. He said relationships needs to be protected.
