Swimming team departs for African Junior Champs

The team manager, Farida Pearmain told Mmegi Sport before the departure that the competition was used as a qualifier for the African Swimming Confederation Championship (CANA) to be held in Mauritius next year. She said the swimmers were selected based on the times that they have clocked this year and the top six were picked to represent Botswana at the continental stage.
She said she expected the swimmers to do their best because they have been preparing for the competition.
Pearmain said local swimmers had always excelled in international competitions and the same performance would be expected in Egypt. She said the morale was high in the camp and every athlete was ready to go beyond the limit. Pearmain said: “Swimming is one of the codes that are growing and the support from the parents has been amazing. The involvement of parents in their children’s sport is crucial. For us to move forward in sport development in general, we need support from all stakeholders.
The swimmers are motivated and we just have to wait for the competition to begin. We do not want to put them under pressure by setting medal target.”
The team: Ayaan Chand (Dolton Morton Swimming School), Matthews Ives (Kubu swimming Club), Zinhle Bekker (Dolton Morton swimming school), James Freeman (Dolton Morton swimming school), Amantle Mogara (Dolton Morton swimming school), Banyana Ebineng (Gaborone Aquatic Center), and the coach is Matthew Gibson.
