Absenteeism cuts Kweneng council session short

Surprised councillors said the session had not been officially closed and no new date for another meeting had been provided.  The date of a fresh council is traditionally announced on the closure of the last session.

Yesterday, Kweneng council secretary, Wazha Tema confirmed that the council meeting had been adjourned until further notice.

“The council could have finished its business, but it didn’t because some councillors preferred not to attend afternoon sessions when the meeting was on,” he said.

“The council chairman was forced to adjourn the meeting until further notice and it has been two weeks now.”

He said the development had badly affected council business as certain issues could not be changed or done without council approval. One of these issues was the failure to review council by-laws, which had been pencilled in for the failed session.

“It is very important that council should resume its session because our by-laws are due for review. We cannot operate with the old ones because of loopholes that exist in them. Again we have questions and answers that need to be attended to. I hope the council chairman will soon notify them about the meeting,” Tema said.

He added that councillors had frequently been advised about the importance of attending council meetings and also about the dangers of failing to form a quorum.

“However, some prefer to go without apologising or notifying the council chairman,” he said.

 Tema said he believed the council chair would call for the resumption of the session within a week.
