Madi Majwana drama to curb financial indiscipline

“The radio drama focuses on money management because we recognise this as a critical skill if one needs to live a comfortable and successful life,” he said. He said after the success of the 2013 theatrical performance of Money Matters they decided to come up with a radio drama that can reach all corners of the country. “Based on the success of the theatrical production and our desire to reach a wider audience, we agreed to develop and launch a radio drama series in 2014,” he said. Van der Merwe indicated that Season I of the radio drama series was very successful in reaching over 200,000 people across Botswana.
“It featured on three radio stations for a period of 20 weeks. It focuses on people’s relationship with money and the complex issues and problems that we are faced with in our daily lives,” he said. “We have to have a healthy relationship with money and learn to manage it effectively, saving for those rainy days, which are inevitable and which would allow us to live within our means,” he added.
Van der Merwe also announced that this year’s production would include iKalanga, which makes it more accessible to communities in the Kalanga speaking areas.
For his part, deputy governor at Bank of Botswana, Oduetse A Motshidisi said the new Madi Majwana programme would improve the opportunities for the youth, in both the world of work and their daily lives.
“More broadly, the message of Madi Majwana will resonate even further, the extent to which it can be incorporated into the educational curricula,” he said. Motshidisi indicated that Bank of Botswana supports the important initiative and it illustrates how the creative industry can be a tool for social and economic inclusion.
“Access to financial services is of little use, and is even potentially harmful, if not used properly and effectively by an informed public,” he said.
Motshidisi said it would be hard to succeed and reach objectives without a dose of entertainment from Madi Majwana.
