BLLAHWU condemns transfer of DC�s

Speaking in an interview yesterday, BLLAHWU Secretary General Ketlhalefile Motshegwa said just like failure to separate powers in the executive and legislature, failure to separate local government and central government shows growth of dictatorship.
Motshegwa said other countries were decentralising but Botswana was doing the opposite - centralising.
“They are now taking everything from Local Government,” he said. “First it was clinics and other services, now district commissioners to the Office of the President. That is a questionable move.” Motshegwa added that it made no sense to move district commissioners to Office of the President when they worked in the districts.
However, Motshegwa said the position of a district commissioner was useless, as it had been meant for colonial rulers.
He added that the district commissioner did not have much to do apart from administering marriages and becoming protocol officers for presidential and ministerial meetings. He called for the abolition of the district commissioner cadre. Khama announced during the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) special congress over the weekend that district commissioners would be moved to his office in an effort to improve productivity and efficiency.
Under Khama’s leadership, a number of entities have been moved to the Office of the President.
These include the Directorate on Intelligence and Security Service, Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime and the state media.
