Red tape delays grant disbursement

BPL chief executive officer, Bennett Mamelodi, told Mmegi Sport that the payment process at DBS is lengthy but has since been sorted out and clubs were expected to receive their grants this week. “The process includes tax clearances amongst other things. The delay was not caused by the BPL and I can assure you that the matter is under control and the dues will be paid to the clubs by the end of this week,” Mamelodi said yesterday.

BPL chairman, Walter Kgabung acknowledged that clubs are affected by the delay but not too adversely. “The grant is P15,000 and clubs’ monthly budgets go up to P75,000 so I do not think this has affected our clubs that much,” he said. Kgabung said he did not have a record of how many teams are still owed. “There are clubs which were owed last season’s grants, and I can confirm that they were paid. As of now, I do not know how many clubs are owed,” Kgabung said.

Meanwhile, there are no Premiership matches this weekend due to the international break. The Zebras are in Eritrea for the 2018 World Cup qualifier tomorrow.
