Boyfriend up for 'threatening to kill' girlfriend

The 47-year-old Tikologo Moremi allegedly uttered, “I am going to kill you before judgement in the matter before the court is delivered” or words to that effect to Gosegomang Ramanganeng on April 1, 2021, in Tonota.

The police said that the words Moremi allegedly uttered are concerning another incident in which Moremi allegedly chopped both of Ramanganeng's legs with an axe last year rendering her wheelchair-bound.

The chopping incident is pending judgement next month.

Inspector Kenneth Edward applied for the accused to be remanded in custody because he may execute his mission of killing the complainant if he is granted bail.

The court heard that at one point last year, Ramanganeng pleaded with the court to drop the grievous bodily harm charge because if the accused was to be convicted, no one was going to take care of their six children.

Magistrate Game Mooketsi said that she was of the view that the complainant may try to withdraw the current charge as she did in the past.

When pleading to be granted bail, Moremi told the court that the charge of threat to kill levelled against him was trumped up.

The accused added that the charge against him was a ruse that the complainant was using against him because she misused the money that he gave her on the morning of the fateful day to buy alcohol.

“The complainant was very drunk that evening and when I asked her where she was the whole day, she went to the police station to report that I threatened to kill her. I never threatened to kill her as she alleges but she is just using the charge to get back at me,” Moremi said.

Magistrate Mooketsi then told the police to further investigate the matter because there was a possibility that the accused may be telling the truth.

“The accused is facing a very serious offence... In my view, the police should thoroughly investigate this matter further and not necessarily be seen to be favouring the complainant over the accused. It is clear that the accused and complainant are living in an acrimonious relationship... The accused shall be remanded in custody for a week for the police to further investigate all issues that the accused raised in his application for bail. He shall be remanded in custody until April 15 for a status hearing,” Mooketsi said.
