Kabelo Keolopile: “I always cherish this day because our country is one of the few that has peace. We are blessed because we haven’t experienced war in our country. Again our political parties differs only at the rallies but they share drinks afterwards, something that we are proud of as a nation.”

He said Batswana are people who believe in Botho “humanity” and that keep t them going.  Seitshiro Goepang: “The reason why I always go to the National Stadium to celebrate Independence Day is because I believe my country has achieved a lot.

At the beginning of our journey, some countries ruled us out but we managed to keep our dignity as a country.

Again we have been doing well economically compared to our  neighbouring countries.”

Goepang is convinced that Botswana managed to survive the economic recession.

“Although we were seriously affected, but our situation was not that bad.

We still have some private companies coming and investing in our country. Of course some Batswana lost jobs, but the government on the other hand is trying to help,” Goepang said.  Kelebogile Sebopiwa said the day should be used to educate Batswana about the country’s history.

“I don’t think a lot is being done to educate the young people on why we should celebrate this day. Again, companies should be forced to release workers on this day.

This is our day and all Batswana should celebrate it. The reason why some Batswana do not go to thestadium or dikgotla for celebrations is because their employers do not value this day.”

She said iindependence is celebrated more in rural areas than cities because there is too much formalities in cities and less of cultural reflections.
