Fatal biology or human extinction

The 2010 young-adult dystopian science fiction novel is the second book in the Maze Runner Saga.

It is preceded by The Maze Runner, and followed by The Death Cure, The Kill Order, and finally The Fever Code. In this thriller, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and his fellow gladers face their greatest challenge yet as they search for clues about the mysterious and powerful organisation known as WCKD.  The teenagers’ journey takes them to the Scotch, a desolate landscape filled with unimaginable obstacles. Teaming up with resistance fighters, the gliders take on WCKD’s vastly superior forces and also face a mammoth task of surviving the flare. This blockbuster continues the legacy in Built Last Summer, as the entire cast have reprised their roles among others TV series star, star Dylan O’Brien still plays the inquisitive rebellion teenager Thomas. Director Wee Ball carries on where he left off with the first Maze Runner.

Action

Scorch Trials had so much hype in the build-up to the premiere because of the success of the previous films. Game City theatres were buzzing with an audience of mixed ages, which clearly showed the movie’s growing brand. The film has a suspense element, which will bring one to the edge of their seat as suspicion starts embroiling Thomas. When (Aidan Gillen) Janson keeps taking gliders to a restricted facility without bringing them back then all hell breaks loose, as Thomas and others start looking for answers.

In this new film, the creators have gone up a notch. Scorch Trials can make your heart skip a beat for a moment due to the horrific flare virus outbreak that transformed the cinema into a creepy place. The virus turns people into outrageous zombie looking maniacs called cranks, which feasts on immune blood (uninfected people). The movie has a lot of scary scenes some of which include when the cranks appear a lot like dead bodies. The cranks come to live at the sight of light and noise, delivering terror in search of human blood.

The movie has good use of special effects, for example vicious cranks look way too spooky, because of special effects like computer generated imagery apart.

Maze Runner Scorch Trials also has a good setting. It showcases desolate landscape of tattered buildings and scorching deserts as the new maze.

Getting down to the informal part of the movie, Scorch Trials tells a story of the battle of good against evil as Janson is working with devious doctor Ava Paige (Patricia Clarkson) to find a cure for the flare virus by fatally harvesting blood from the likes of Thomas against their will. The movie taps into issues of cruelty, humanity, betrayal, friendship, morality and justice, among others. The action is exhilarating.  The movie has set the bar high for similar films like the upcoming Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 scheduled for November.

Reception

According to box office, Maze Runner: Scorch Trials was produced from a $61 million budget, but it has been a fan favourite in cinemas as to date the movie raked in a huge $184 million. The vicious cranks stormed to box office number one after pocketing $30 million upon the film’s international premiere two weeks ago. This film has outdone its first series as it only grossed $102 million.

New movies leading box office:

1. Hotel Transylvania

2. The Intern

3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

4. Everest

5. Black Mass
