Ayuso continues cycling dominance

The cyclist crossed the line in a time of 2:32:37secs with Lulu Telekelo of Jwaneng Club second with a time of 2:33:22secs. Kyle Poppleton of Tsela Riders finished third in 2:33:22secs.

Ayuso told Mmegi Sport after his victory that he was faced with stiff competition due to the high number of cyclists in the race. He said the wind made the race difficult at the beginning, but worked in his favour on his way to the finish line.

Runner-up Telekelo said his aim was to beat Ayuso, but unfortunately he failed. Telekelo said Ayuso had support from his teammates. He said it was important to go into a competition with teammates.

Elvis Setshogo grabbed the 60km male race in a time of 1:18:13secs followed by Yuyi Matome and Mmoloki Matilamba. Arnold Kokwane of Jonmol Club won the 60km junior male category followed by Shathani Mbulawa. 

Ronald Chiahengo of Tsela Riders grabbed the 20km junior male race with a time of 0:46:51secs followed by Nigel Jobling and Boago Matlhare. Kebaabetswe Moterati of Jwaneng Club won the 20km open male race with Obakeng Koketse coming second.

Anouk van der Geest of Tsela Riders Club won the women’s section with a time of 2:36:59secs while Hillary O’leary with a time of 2:54:08secs was second. Bakang Ebudilwe crossed the line in 2:54:57secs to grab third place.

Van der Geest said the race did not go according to her plan because the loops were challenging. She said there were many corners and she was under pressure from male cyclists.

“I am impressed with the increase in the number of women cyclists. It shows the growth of the sport in the country,” she said.

Heidi Gopolang from Tsela Riders won the women’s 60km race in a time of 1:31:34secs followed by Maryam Newman and Sadie Muganga finished third clocking 1:40:22secs.

Gopolang told Mmegi Sport that despite her victory, she did not have enough time to practise for the competition. She said she used her experience and skill to win.

Jip Vader was the first to arrive in the women’s 60km junior category in a time of 1:22:28secs followed by Bonno Motlhetlhi.

Lebogang Radikara won the 20km women’s open section with a time of 1:07:05secs followed by Kefilwe Makuku and Banyana Rapelang. Mascom sponsored the inaugural Cycle Challenge to the tune of P70,000.
