The duo proved worthy legends of local gospel music on Saturday night at Boipuso Hall as they dished out spiritually uplifting renditions and took the masses way back when mainstream gospel took off.

The festival that was organised by Kagiso Morebodi of the Remmogo Organisation celebrated the first-ever annual Independence Gospel Music Festival. What a way to kick-start independence festivities, with the legends who paved way for other artists!

The legends at one point shared the stage and performed We Are Waiting, raising nostalgia that had already befallen gospel enthusiasts to another level. Gospel lovers at this point were on their feet, shouting and screaming as they sang along.

Pherepheretlhe, who was first on stage, dished out his popular songs that included Lekunutu le Morena and Ketshepile Wena.

He did not disappoint his fans. Phempherethe showcased dance moves, which seemed like a fusion of traditional and modern dance, while he belted out his tunes.

On the other hand, Marakakgoro’s Eat-Sum-Mor tune was one of his most loved songs. The crowd became impatient while Marakakgoro was performing other songs and kept asking the gospel singer to perform Eat-Sum-Mor.

When he finally performed the song, excitement filled the room as the gospel legend rendered his poetic prowess. The audience, which had been begging Marakakgoro to perform Eat Sum Mor  stood up when he got to the chorus.

He closed his set with an emotional piece dubbed Nneneketse, which touched on all aspects of relationships and life in general. The song goes thus at some point in our lives we need a support system to fully function and overcome tragedies.

The legends paved way for other gospel artists, who included Matthews Matsetse, Shugie Fisher, Boitshoko Charity and Tshepo Lesole.

For some people, it was a joy to see Shugie Fisher on stage performing as a gospel artist. She was a marvel to watch and so were Matsetse and Lesole who were always in their element when on stage.

Other performances were by Turning Point, Joyful Ambassadors, Ditsala Mo Moreneng and Mogoditshane UCCSA youth choir.
