Tamokate Wins Oldies Pageant

The pageant, which was well attended, was the first of its kind in Old Naledi. Proceeds from the pageant will go towards buying food for independence celebrations.

Tamokate proved to be the crowd’s favourite from the start given the roaring applause she received when she walked confidently onto the stage. After pushing through to the top five, she impressed the judges and the crowd with her answer about the three dikgosi who had gone to England to seek protection. She won herself a night at the Grand Palm hotel and pampering at a beauty parlour.

Contestants paraded for the judges in their modern and traditional outfits, where they were judged on their attires, confidence, conduct and smile shown during the parade.

Though it seemed like a daunting task to some, all the contestants were beautiful in their own way and tried their best to impress the judges.

Tamokate, together with; 56-year-old Margaret Ramore, 68-year-old Cordelia Osupeng, 60-year-old Menko Kgano and Boitumelo Makwela, emerged among the top five and had to face off by answering questions on Botswana’s independence. Kgano and Ramore became the second and first princess respectively. Other contestants were Goememang Makopo, Khumoetsile Kabomo, Sekgabo Thusang and Mary Ipotseng.

It might not have been a glamorous pageant like all others with no famous entertainers but for residents of Old Naledi, it was a fanfare and one that would go down as the best in their calendar.
