Bobirwa JSS students urged to study hard

Speaking during the school’s prize giving ceremony recently, Puleng said that students should work hard to get better results. He said that students should understand that it is through hard work that they can attain the same level of achievement and success like other schools.

He said students should take time to reflect and get their priorities right. He also cautioned students to avoid indulging in love affairs with elderly people hoping to live a successful life. “Hard work and study are the only tickets to what you perceive as good life, not sugar daddies or sugar mummies,” he said.

Puleng also advised students from disadvantaged families to take that as a temporary setback on their journey to a successful life. “Let not your background stand in your way. Work hard and doors of opportunities will open wide for you,” he said.

He also said that students should also refrain from their mentality of assuming that only children from economically stable families can perform better than disadvantaged children. “It is not entirely correct to assume students from well to do families do better than children from economically challenged backgrounds,” he said.

Puleng said it is important for parents and the community to get involved in their children’s education. He said parents should stop leaving the responsibility of moulding students only to teachers. “Supportive parenting and guidance can help instill self esteem and confidence in students allowing them to choose a career path of their choices,” he said. Puleng also advised students that education provides them with knowledge of the world around them.

“Education is not only about lessons in textbooks, it also provides you with knowledge of the world around you,” he said. Bobirwa JSS has a shortage of teaching staff and accommodation.

Despite these challenges the school has been performing fairly well for the past five years. In 2010 it was awarded a certificate for obtaining the highest value addition in Bobirwa cluster.

In 2011 it was awarded a certificate for obtaining position two in Bobirwa region and another certificate for being the best-improved school in the region. Last year the school obtained position two in quality pass rate and position three in highest value addition category.

Meanwhile, BTC donated a printer to the school and awarded laptops to the best performing teacher and students. Puleng said that as BTC they are willing to help the schools where necessary to help them carry their mandate of educating the nation.
