Specialist probes suspected police chase death

The deceased was part of a group of men who were suspected of an attempted break in. Security guards called police to the scene and the man died after colliding with a police truck during the chase. Mochudi police station commander, Simon Sitale said investigations into the matter are ongoing and the results from the specialist are due next week.

“We have since involved the specialist to help determine what could have happened,” he said. The incident sparked a storm of controversy in the Kgatleng capital, as relatives of the deceased man claimed police had run over the deceased in an act of foul play.

Sitale previously told Mmegi that it was possible that the man hit the Toyota Hilux himself and died.

“At this point we do not know if the car hit him or he hit the car. We have since arrested three men in relation to the incident,” he said.  The deceased’s aunt previously said the police had knocked at their homestead in the wee hours of the morning of the incident and informed them that a young man had died after a police chase. Police asked the family to identify the body.

“His friends who were with him at the time of his death told us that they were on their way home from a drinking hole that night when one of them decided to stop and pee.

Because it was a public area they had an altercation with the security guards at the shopping complex. “Whilst tussling with the security officers, a police car came out of nowhere and began chasing after them. Unfortunately, my nephew being slower was run over by the police car,” the aunt said.
