Gantsi arts group to fight alcohol, substance abuse

The 17-member association was formed to fight the challenge of alcohol and substance abuse, which is very rampant in the area.

The chairperson of GAA, Thuto Tshweneyagae said one of GAA’ objectives is to promote the spirit of self-reliance, cooperation and unity among youth.

One of GAA’s strategies is to help youth take advantage of opportunities in the arts sector and also develop their talent. Tshweneyagae explained that amongst others, the association will motivate young performers’ road shows and submit names to perform at shows and campaigns organised by different government departments.   The association targets singers, poets, comedians and other performers. Tshweneyagae said they are looking at cultural activities. He also said that through GAA, the youth would be able to showcase their talent by performing at different venues in the area.

He added that their target is mainly remote areas such Kagcae, D’Kar, Ranyanae, Bere, West and East Hanahai and other settlements around.

The group plans to use concerts to disseminate messages on HIV/AIDS, alcohol and substance abuse.

Tshweneyagae said their greatest challenge is lack of funding. He said if they had resources, they would purchase a sound system to use during their tours.

“These children are demoralised because of lack of resources, but we keep motivating them. Children in Gantsi are highly talented; they only need exposure for them to make a mark in the performing arts,” he said.
