High Court judge bags Independence trophy

Moroka, a High Court judge, won the tournament with a net score of 138 followed by Meepat Shankar who had a net score of 139.
Muller Keabetswe clocked a net score of 140 to finish third. Usha Shingal won the women’s section with a net score of 159 followed by Lesedi Malindah with a score of 152 with Minkie Molatlhegi also finishing scoring 152 to finish in the third position.
The tournament was divided into A Division for players with Handicap 0-9, B Division for golfers with Handicap 10-16 and C Division for Handicap 17-24. The women section of the tournament was divided into two categories, being A Division (Handicap 0-15) and B Division (Handicap 16 to 30).
BGU vice president-south, Mpho Kelosiwang told Mmegi Sport yesterday that they had a record turn-up of 150 golfers and were forced to cut down the number to 120 on Sunday.
He explained that they decided to cut the field because they wanted the tournament to be completed on time.
He said the BGU was impressed by the attendance of golfers from different clubs across the country.
He said the BGU calendar is now left with two tournaments to wrap up the year, being the Southern Open and Botswana Classic. The Southern Open is hosted by the Lobatse Golf Club while Botswana Classic is played at Phakalane.
He said the Botswana Classic is the biggest tournament in the country and is played by invitation only. Kelosiwang said golfers are always looking forward to participating in the tournament.
“We are only going to allow the top 15 women to play in the Botswana Classic, but the championship division does not have a limit on entrants. The idea is to attract more players. We also encourage golfers to reduce their handicaps,” he said.
He said the BGU intends to invite players from South Africa to be part of the Botswana Classic. Kelosiwang said the sport is of high standard in the neighbouring country and getting a chance to bring players from there will be a motivation to local players.
