The shining star of the moment was Dominic Muzikiza, who scooped almost all the prizes and ultimately the overall student. The Form 5 student attributed this to hard work and motivation from his parents and teachers.
“I don’t think I would be where I am had it not been for my teachers and most of all my parents and myself for putting all my efforts in my studies,” stated Dominic.
The day was celebrated with song and dance with GSS traditional dance troupe putting up a sterling performance. The guest speaker was the managing director of AT&T Group of Companies Talita Monnakgotla, who urged students to give their education priority and refrain from alcohol, drugs, and sexual relationships as these ills produce nothing but bad results.
“These include failure at school, school drop-outs, teenage pregnancy and ultimately a miserable life,” Monnakgotla stated.She said dropouts at GSS are common and the main causes are pregnancy and continued absence from school. She noted that from November last year to date, 34 students have dropped out of school and 20 due to pregnancy.
She implored parents to take responsibility for their children’s education and advice them not to indulge in sexual activities.
Besides these, GSS is faced with a number of challenges, which Monnakgotla said are shortage of classrooms, high teacher-student ratio and difficult accessibility to main centers, so they are not able to undertake academic trips.
“Despite these challenges GSS has been able to compete with most schools that possess state of the art infrastructure when it comes to academic excellence,” she added. According to Monnakgotla this is proven by the fact that some students from GSS qualified for Botswana Education Hub’s Top Achievers Award in 2012 and 2013.
The school has for the past three years obtained position one in terms of value addition until last year when they obtained position two out of 32 schools.
“This is a commendable effort looking at the calibre of students admitted at GSS in comparison with the quality students admitted at other schools,” she said.
Besides academics Monnakgotla said GSS did well in sports as they managed to go to the finals in some sporting codes with Boxing bringing bronze medals and traditional dance scooping first position.
Other clubs, which reached the finals, are Democracy Youth Club, and practical subjects such as Home Economics and Design and Technology.
