Botswana was in Group A which had Suriname, Guernsey and Fiji. Botswana won against Fiji, but lost to Suriname and Guernsey. The losses meant that the team failed to qualify for Division Five.

Against little known Guernsey, Botswana suffered a massive 151 run loss before a five wicket reversal at the hands of Suriname.  Botswana beat Fiji by two wickets. The team was under the guidance of Kenyan Joseph Angara who only took charge two months before the England tournament.

Only a few batsmen lived up to expectation while statistics show that bowlers were off the mark.

“We were capable of performing better during the tournament, but however failed,” said team manager, Sumod Damodar. He said Botswana had the youngest team and was hard done by the weather and atmosphere, which was new to the players.

“But we do not take that as an excuse,” he said.

Damodar said the tournament gave the youthful team exposure and experience that will improve their game.

“We hope they will improve in future since they have learnt from this experience. We hope that we will organise something for the boys; maybe join a regional tournament for more exposure,” he said.

The Botswana Cricket Association (BCA) board is yet to discuss the coach’s future. Critics have put the blame on the BCA for the team’s poor display arguing the team should be showing progress by now.
