The plot on which Kopano house is planned to be built, was allocated to the BNF in 1985 and on several occasions, land authorities have threatened to repossess the plot as the BNF had failed to develop it.

During a recent visit to Francistown, Boko said drawings for the designs of the party building had been completed.

The latest news comes months after Boko announced that he had appointed a team of professionals from within the party’s ranks, to work on the designs of the project and its associated challenges.

Boko, whose party is part of a tri-party opposition coalition, the Umbrella For Democratic Change, told Mmegi that the BNF was in negotiations with financiers to fund Kopano House’s construction. Other UDC members are the Botswana Movement for Democracy and the Botswana Peoples Party.

“Our goal as the BNF is to make sure that construction of the party headquarters is completed before 2019 general elections so that we use it to ready the party for the elections,” Boko said. “The building will be in the form of a commercial complex that will not only house the party for its activities, but will also have additional offices and other commercial buildings that will be rented out to generate money for the party.”

At the BNF congress in Gantsi in 2013, Boko revealed that the BNF was forced to write a letter to the Ministry of Lands and Housing explaining why the plot should not be repossessed. This was after the ministry had issued yet another letter of intent to repossess the undeveloped plot.

The party has often maintained that the construction of Kopano House could not take off due to lack of funds.
