Recently, Gaborone North constituency rejected Pilane’s application for membership and forwarded their resolutions to the NEC to decide on the matter.

It is now a few months down the line since Pilane, a practicing advocate, applied for the BMD membership.

The issue has even divided party membership. According to a source within the party who preferred anonymity, Pilane’s reasons are not convincing enough for him to be readmitted to the party.

“The constituency committee felt that Pilane left their party under dark clouds.  The committee made recommendations that if NEC want to re-admit Pilane to the BMD, then he should apply to another constituency not theirs and be given a period of four years not to contest for any party positions,” he said.

The source claimed that Pilane’s comeback would likely bring instability to the party.

BMD secretary general, Gilbert Mangole confirmed that NEC would hear Pilane’s membership application.

“The issue will be resolved this Sunday by (the) NEC.  The decision and reasons will be shared with the media. Gaborone North constituency has forwarded their recommendations to us and NEC would decide after consideration of what the constituency is saying,” said Mangole.

He added that recommendations of the constituency would guide the NEC, but they are not binding on the NEC to arrive at a similar decision.

Some of the issues that NEC will address, according to Mangole, include preparation for the unveiling of former secretary general, Gomolemo Motswaledi’s tombstone, which will be held on Independence Day in Serowe.

He said they would have a star rally after Motswaledi’s tombstone unveiling in Serowe.

Mangole said NEC would also allocate responsibilities to the five additional members, co-opted by NEC after the July Gantsi elective congress.
