Strife torn Rollers call special meeting

Township Rollers have called a special general meeting in a bid to restore peace at the strife torn club, which has seen a three-year boardroom tussle reach crisis levels.

The date for the meeting has not been set, but the two factions fighting for the control of the team have agreed to send the matter to the general membership for determination.

Rollers’ chairman, Walter Kgabung said Spencer Mmui and other applicants who took the matter to court, would be invited to a special general meeting at which both camps will map a way forward. “We will have a meeting at which a committee that will head the club will be decided by the Rollers family,” Kgabung said.

He said there is a possibility of the club going for elections and any individual who is a Rollers member would be eligible to vote.

“By the look of things we will be going for elections, the current constitution does not specify if only card carrying members should vote and so anyone who calls themselves a Rollers member will be eligible to vote. I have been working on a new constitution for the past two years but in this case we will be using the old constitution,” he said.

He further said the other camp proposed that they should form an interim committee. “In our last meeting they suggested that we should form an interim committee, but we decided that we should go for elections as we wanted to include everyone in the Rollers family not only the people in Gaborone,” he said.

Mmui confirmed his faction would attend the special general meeting and that the two parties are locked in a mediation process.

He said he would disclose all details after their meetings. The coming on board of investor, Jagdish Shah through an investment arm, Township Holdings torched the current crisis. Township Holdings, in which Shah and Sommerset Gobuiwang own 40percent shares each, has been running the affairs of the club.

However, the court recently ruled the club must be run by a society. Township Holdings had a successful financial season last year with the club making P6 million in revenue and players reportedly earning handsome salaries.
