UDC to petition Khama over power, water

The UDC has written to the police notifying them about their intention to hold a peaceful march/demonstration tomorrow (Friday) in order to hand over a petition to President Ian Khama.

The match will be between 10am and 2pm and it will start from Kwena Spar along the Molepolole-Gaborone road (A12), into Nelson Mandela drive, then into Khama Crescent. The matchers will then turn left by Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC) and the Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, up to the Office of the President.

“The intention of the said march is to hand over a petition to the Office of the President pertaining to the water and power crisis which the city of Gaborone, greater Gaborone and the entire country is currently facing,” said the UDC parliamentary caucus spokesperson Phenyo Butale. 

 “Permission is therefore sought in terms of the Penal Code and the Public Order Act that you grant us the necessary assistance on the above stated time and dates.”

This week, the UDC secretary general, Ndaba Gaolathe, said party president, Duma Boko and other leaders intend to join this mass walk. “We are still waiting for permit approval, hopefully allowing us to embark on this peaceful walk this Friday. We need to do this, not to embarrass anyone, but to demonstrate to those who come after us that we are responsible citizens who understand that leaders need to be held accountable,” explained Gaolathe on his Facebook page.

He said: “We need to spread the gospel that our country can do better, much better than it is doing. We need to amplify the voices of our people, so they too know that they can be heard. Our people need to know that there are people out there who care for them, there are people out there who sing their songs.”

He said they believe in the magnificent potential of the people and what they could all become as a nation, a great nation.
