Paulo Machava, Publisher and Editor of the electronic daily paper Diario de Noticias, was gunned down near his home in Maputo, while undertaking his early morning physical exercises before going to work, as was his routine. So far there are no known reasons for this assassination, nor have the assailants been identified. Equally, no precedents are known that could help explain what might be behind the assassination.

The killing of Machava has provoked a wave of indignity among journalism professionals in Mozambique, with the possible effect that it could compromise freedom of the press, an essential element for the deepening of democracy in Mozambique.

MISA-Mozambique denounces this act, and appeals to the authorities to do everything necessary to investigate the circumstances which have resulted in the killing of Machava, so that those responsible are brought to book.
