Okaile shot down reports that some executive committee members are already expressing doubts over Gumbo and his technical team’s ability to reclaim the title they last won in 2008. “That is not true,” he said. “Every Monday we have a meeting as the executive committee and discuss the past weekend’s performance of the team. But we have not discussed the future of the coach.”

Okaile said while they accept that they have not been doing well, they know their challenges which they are optimistic they will overcome. He said one of the challenges was that although they have managed to bolster their squad, they have not been able to utilise them since there are boardroom issues around those signatures. He said the issue of Hendrick Moyo and that of Tshepo Maikano are some of the challenges they are facing and hope to resolve them soon.

He said: “We need to have all our players and start competing like other teams. The Players’ Status Committee recently declared Moyo a GU player, but Orapa United have officially lodged an appeal and insist the player signed a contract with them before he signed with GU.

Maikano is also currently watching from the sidelines as Extension Gunners also claim his ownership. People say we released players and did not get replacements. There was an effort to replace, but some of things we have no control over.”

Okaile also said the other challenge was that the club held its elective meeting when the transfer window was already open.

“By the time we started work, it was already nearing the end, but we tried to bolster our squad,” he said.

GU lost the services of some of the big name players among them Tebogo Sembowa who has already scored four goals at his new team, Jwaneng Galaxy. Jackie Mothatego and Ronald Chikomo joined Mochudi Centre Chiefs and Orapa United respectively. GU take on Miscellaneous in their next fixture after the international break before they face Chiefs.
