Huawei received the award from the permanent secretary in Ministry of Education and Skills Development, Richard Matlhare.

The MOLEMA – an abbreviation for Mokgalo, Lecheng and Malaka – cluster was formed as a response to the MoESD call for schools to celebrate teachers as groups and not in isolation as was initially the arrangement.

The assistant minister of Education and Skills Development Moiseraele Goya and the Permanent Secretary to the President Carter Morupisi, the project initiators, launched the event.

A representative from the Chinese Embassy Li Nan and Huawei Technologies deputy managing director Gao Wenli also graced the event.

Goya commended the private sector for helping in the development of education, as well as the Chinese Embassy and Huawei for their contribution and urged others to come on board.

Morupisi thanked all stakeholders who made it possible for the programme to be launched. Li Nan stated that this year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Botswana and China, a friendship cemented with exchanges and cooperation. He urged other Chinese companies to follow the example of Huawei to fulfil their corporate social responsibilities.

For his part, Huawei representative, Wenli stated that, “We have always focused on bridging the digital divide and we should empower the young people-the future of the nation and apply ICT in daily education in Botswana so that these children will not fall behind their peers in other parts of the world.

We are here today once again to demonstrate our determination of bridging the digital divide through creating educational opportunities. We will always abide by our promise of growing together with Botswana”.

The company donated 36 tablet computers to the schools and sponsored entertainment for the event.  Early this year, Huawei was one of the donors at the WTISD in Gantsi, sponsoring the BEC annual excellence awards and participated in the UB new student orientation.
