BAA spokesperson Roland Masalila told Mmegi Sport that the association would support Amos despite the disappointing result. “BAA is with him. We are not going to crucify him. Amos tried his best, but unfortunately it was a bad day in the office for him,” he said.

Masalila said Amos still has many years ahead of him.  “It was Amos’ first world championships and this is the second biggest stage after the Olympics so he is learning,” he said.

Masalila indicated that it is not the end of the world for Botswana with Isaac Makwala and the 4x400m relay team still in contention. “We still have the 4x400m relay and Kabelo Kgosiemang of high jump,” he said.  He added that the support for the team in Beijing was strong.   “The (BAA) president, the coach and the team manager are there and they will motivate the athletes even during the bad times,” he said.  Masalila dismissed reports that BAA did not have a medal target for the team.

“BAA expected nothing less than a silver from Amos, but we are hoping to salvage something from the remaining athletes.” Amos would have a second chance when he joins the 4x400m relay team.

“People should not be harsh on the athletes because they do follow the coach’s instructions,” he said.
