Crocs devouring children, livestock

District Wildlife officials recently confirmed the rising cases of crocodiles attack on livestock and residents in the Setatunga and Tsanakona areas. Senior Wildlife warden, Isaac Nato of the Problem Animal Control Unit at Department of Wildfire and National Parks in Maun said they are recording worrying incidents  of crocodiles  attacks on  children in the rivers. He said on the 15th May, a crocodile attacked a 13 year old boy while he was fishing and broke his right hand.

Another incident was recorded in January  when a 13 year old boy also sustained injuries after he was also attacked by a crocodile when he was swimming with other two boys in sitatunga area.

Nato said in 2014 they recorded 29 cases of rocodile attacks on livestock where 51 animals were killed. Nato said in 2015, so far they have recorded 13 cases from which 21 livestock have been killed.

The area councillor Vepaune Moreti suspect the crocodiles have now given birth and have evidently tripled their numbers. He said his constituents want government to kill or translocate the crocodiles from their areas to avoid the conflict which he said is now in its third year.
