Leaked video exposes NWDC employees poaching

Mmegi is in possession of a video which shows three men who worked for the council’s environmental health department caught after killing three gemsboks and 11 guinea fowls in a Hainaveld sheep farm. In the video, the farmer is heard asking the three men if they worked for NWDC but none of them responded.

The video shows three gemsboks and 11 guinea fowls loaded in a branded NWDC land cruiser with the plate numbers B 981 AHT. The guinea fouls were in a black refuse bags. A rifle, suspected to have been used for poaching, is also captured in the video.

Abraham Kesupetswe, the police officer commanding in Maun, confirmed that police were investigating a case of paoching that occurred at Somelo on July 24. He said the suspects had been on a trip to spray mosquito insecticides at Somelo Primary School when they were arrested and questioned for killing the gemsboks and the guinea fowls.

Kesupetswe said the men men used a council vehicle but while the rifle belonged to one of them. The suspected crime happened at Selenium Farm. Samples from the animals and the birds were sent to the Police forensic laboratory in Gaborone for verification.

He said the suspects were not in police custody and were yet to appear in court for poaching.

Efforts to get a comment from the North West District Council were futile as authorities were said to be on a trip to Sellebi Phikwe.
