The Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) spokesperson, Roland Masalila told Mmegi Sport that the team arrived in China on Monday without any complications. “They have begun their training and they will have a morning and afternoon training sessions every day,” he said.  Masalila said they have not yet received the timetable for the races, but they are expecting it soon.

“Our team manager will share the timetable as soon as it becomes available and that’s when we will distribute it,” he said. He said he was working hand in hand with the team manager Olebogeng Oitebetse to give out all the necessary updates concerning the athletes.

The team comrpises African 400m record holder Isaac Makwala, Olympic Games silver medalist Nijel Amos, Leaname Maotoanong, Sakarea Kamberuka, Onkabetse Nkobolo and Kabelo Kgosiemang of high jump. Justice Dipeba and Jean Vester are the coaches.

Though BAA indicated on Friday that they do not want to put a lot of pressure on the athletes regarding medals target, a lot will be expected from Makwala and Amos. The two have been doing well in international competitions and they carry Batswana’s hopes.

The last time Botswana brought a medal from the World Championships was in 2011 when Amantle Montsho grabbed gold in the 400m.
