Khama to decide on Molale again

Molale resigned from Parliament on July 23 but President Ian Khama immediately re-appointed him to cabinet, using his authority under Section 42 of the Constitution. Molale broke a record as the first Motswana to resign from Parliament and be appointed cabinet minister within three hours.

However, the way it stands, Molale will be subjected to the same procedure through which he joined the National Assembly after the 2014 general elections, if he is appointed specially elected MP. Prior to the elections, Molale was Permanent Secretary to the President, a position he left just a few days after the October elections. Speaker of the National Assembly Gladys Kokorwe would not be drawn into discussing the return of Molale, referring our enquiries to government spokesperson Dr Jeff Ramsay.

“Ask Dr Ramsay, that decision lies with the president,” she said.

Ramsay, said people have to wait to see if the President will re-elect Molale or not.

“This is a political decision that would be made by the president. No one knows whether the president will nominate Molale. Parliament session is going to be held in November,” Ramsay said.

He said the name of the person who is supposed to be specially elected would be brought to Parliament and Opposition parties will also  bring theirs.

“The MPs will vote for the person that they want to be specially elected. It depends on the MPs if they want the person that is chosen by the president or not,” he said.

Molale lost to Kgosi Lotlamoreng II, of the Umbrella for Democratic Change in the Goodhope-Mabule constituency by-election, with a margin of 1,780 votes.
