The camp was held at the Francistown Tennis Club courts.

The founder and director of the school, Dominique Raquin said about 50 children aged between four and 14 were part of the three-day camp. The Midlands Junior Open will feature three age categories: the under 10, 12 and 14. The main purpose of the junior tournament in Zimbabwe is to groom tennis players from a young age.

Raquin said the children would participate in two other local tournaments as part of the preparations for the Midlands Junior Open. There will also be a three-day Spur mini tennis tournament at Francistown club starting August 17. Players will also take part in the Orapa junior tournament at the Orapa Tennis Club from August 21-22, just before they leave for Zimbabwe.

“We do not have an outright selection process, but we are looking at travelling with around 15 players for the tournament,” he said. “We will have probably three or four players per category.”

Raquin said the Midlands junior open tournament would be used to select children who will take part in the Daveyton Y-TEX tennis tournament in Benoni, South Africa on August 30.

He said the Francistown School of Tennis recently approached the Botswana Primary School Sports Association to register tennis at primary level for early identification of talent.

Raquin established the Francistown School of Tennis in March 2013 to develop tennis at grass root level.
