With the home crowd behind them, Matebele grabbed their first three points of the season with two goals from each half.

On loan goalkeeper, Mwampule Masule was making his debut on Matebele colours and he kept a clean sheet.

New Orapa United signing, Ronald Chikomo, was not available for selection due to work permit issues while Hendrick Moyo could not play because his case was before the Players Status Committee. The team therefore opted to start with Bonolo Fraizer upfront alongside Patrick Lenyeletse and Mandlaenkosi ‘Sukunyetsa’ Sibanda.

The game started at a low pace with both teams unable to construct threatening moves towards the goal posts. BDF XI started to attack from the wings hoping to use crosses into the box. On the half hour mark, the two teams were still stuck on deadlock and neither was showing any intention of scoring soon.

Out of nowhere, BDF XI capitalised from a corner and Moshe Gaolaolwe’s header helped Matebele break the deadlock and take the lead for the first time in the game.

The goal inspired confidence from the home side and they began to launch more attacks upfront. About 1, 000 BDF recruits marched around the stadium, singing dikoma in support of the hosts. The game went to recess with BDF XI leading 1-0.

The game resumed at a high pace with Orapa United under pressure to equalise or risk losing. BDF XI extended the lead on the 55th minute through Patrick Kaunda’s wonderful finish.

He capitalised from a goalkeeper mistake to hand Matebele their second goal. Minutes later, Orapa United’s Tumelo Mazebedi could have scored but his shot went wild.

On the 75th minute, Lemogang Maswena also failed to convert when his volleyed shot went over Masule’s goal posts.

Approaching the dying minutes of the game, BDF XI were now fuelling more fire into their opponents. Orapa was getting frustrated and hoping to get a consolation goal or perhaps force a comeback.

In a post-match interview Orapa United Assistant Coach, Oitsile Koolese said the team did not play well but they gave it a try.

“We did well in the first 15 minutes, but then there was lapse in our midfield,” he explained.

The winning coach Beston Chambeshi said he was happy with the players because they followed his instructions.

“Playing a team like Orapa wasn’t easy, but I am glad that we managed to get the right result,” he said.
