New BOMU president vows to fight piracy

Speaking to Showbiz after his win, Mmusi said, “The journey has just started, the hope for a better industry lies with me and my team, and I am confident that with the support of not only union members but also of the outgoing committee, BOMU will be what we have always envisioned it to be”.
The new president added, “I wish to take this time to give a stern warning to those who continue to pirate music and sell it at a lesser price, my term in office I will be to fight piracy with everything I have.
The time has come for our artists to reap the benefits of their hard work”.
Mmusi was elected president at the just-ended BOMU Annual General Meeting (AGM) over the weekend. He won the seat with 13 votes, ahead of Seabelo Modibe who only managed to attract eight votes, followed by second runner up, Garero Tekere, who got three votes.
The previous president, Bafana ‘Phempheretlhe’ Pheto may have this year felt the flames of the ‘hot seat’ as he did not run to retain the seat. Still at the AGM, BOMU general executive committee presented its report to members.
They highlighted some of their success stories as well as the challenges they faced.
The executive announced the union’s partnership with Fairground Holdings, which is divided into two segments with regard to annual activities.
They said that these are the Annual Cultural Night as well as the Botswana Consumer Fair entertainment, which is held annually at a cost to Fairgrounds.
Already artists like Tumza, Spiza, Blec Quin, and Slizer benefited a lot from the arrangement.
The executive also highlighted that they have also introduced an artist-booking system through BOMU.
Other stakeholders that BOMU has worked with are Botswana Prisons Service, the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre and Botswana Institute for Development Policy Analysis.
